Master of Professional Studies in Homeland Security
Occupations in homeland security and homeland defense continue to grow in both the federal government and private sector. Penn State's graduate programs in homeland security can prepare you to be a leader in the growing field of homeland security. The program provides a curriculum that will help you learn to:
• identify and assess potential threats, vulnerabilities, and consequences
• comprehend major policy and legislation that shapes homeland security
• apply the skills for procuring and acting on information
• recognize how natural and man-made catastrophes affect society and the domestic and global economy
• develop an awareness of the cultural, social, psychological, political, and legal aspects of terrorism and counterterrorism
Penn State offers a series of homeland security core courses that can provide you with a fundamental understanding of homeland security in a global context, and then you can choose a specialization: the general homeland security base program — which focuses on policy and organization — or options in cyber threat analytics and prevention, counterterrorism, public health preparedness, intelligence and geospatial analysis, information security and forensics, or agricultural biosecurity and food defense.
The online courses are flexible, allowing you to continue working in your current profession. In addition, the class assignments are focused on knowledge and skills that are applicable in the workplace. The curriculum is also appropriate if you want to transfer from a related field into the field of homeland security or one of its specializations.
The program offers many online certificates, including the Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security and Defense. The credits you earn in the certificate may be applied toward the Master’s in Homeland Security. Please consult with an academic adviser.
Penn State has a history of 100+ years of distance education and more than a decade of experience in online learning. We strive to create an online learning environment that brings you as close to the face-to-face experience as possible.
