Johns Hopkins University (JHU) is an accredited, private, not-for-profit, research university located in Baltimore, Maryland. Founded in 1876, the university takes its name from its first benefactor, Johns Hopkins. He was an American entrepreneur, abolitionist, and philanthropist, devoted to improving public health and education. JHU’s first president, Daniel Coit Gilman, inaugurated the school and went on to define the model of the American research university.
Today, the spirit of inquiry is still vital to Johns Hopkins. It lives on in all nine academic divisions, each of which offer full-time graduate programs. Plus, you don’t have to be on a Johns Hopkins campus to get the benefits of a Johns Hopkins education. Look for online graduate programs in business, biotechnology and more. Find certificates, masters and doctorate degrees in innovative and in-demand fields.
America’s first research university, Johns Hopkins was founded on the belief that teaching and research are interdependent, and that a modern university must do both well. Central to JHU values is the mission to foster original research and bring the benefits of discovery to the world.
Based on Fall 2015 data, graduate enrollment at JHU was over 16,250 students.i
The JHU Schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering offer wide ranging financial assistance to graduate students. Offerings may include fellowships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, other academic employment possibilities, and tuition waivers. All full-time, resident, doctoral graduate students in the schools receive free health insurance.
Applicants to Johns Hopkins University submit their form online. Extra forms and official transcripts or hardcopies may be mailed to the office of admission for each school.
There is no singular process for all programs. Student first choose the department and degree program. From there, students should ‘know their deadline’, as these dates vary. Application requisites also vary by degree, program, and cohort option. As a rule, applicants will be required to submit the following.
With some variance, the Johns Hopkins University Online program schedule is divided into 4 terms. These usually begin at the end of August, the end of October, the end of January, and mid-March. On average, 2-3 courses will be offered per term. Courses typically start at the beginning of each term and last for the full 8 weeks.
Researchers at the nine academic divisions and at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory have made JHU the nation’s leader in federal research and development funding each year since 1979. These same researchers mentor students. Among them are the Bloomberg Distinguished Professors, a cohort of world-class scholars.
