California State University, Northridge: Online

California State University Northridge Online is located in Los Angeles, California, in the heart of the San Fernando Valley. Given its home in a bustling, dynamic city, the school’s campus is vibrant and diverse which extends to the California State University, Northridge online classroom.

CSUN online programs are primarily offered at the master’s degree level. However, students can pursue doctorate degrees through a blend of online and on-campus programming.

In fall 2016, Cal State University Northridge employed 925 full-time instructors and 1,180 part-time instructors. In total that semester, the school utilized 219 graduate assistants, all of whom assisted professors and instructors with instruction. The student to faculty ratio that same semester was 26 to 1.i

A Diverse Student Body

In fall 2016, nine percent of CSUN Northridge’s students were what the National Center for Education Statistics called “Non-resident Alien.” Forty-six percent were Hispanic/Latino and 11 percent were Asian. CSUN Northridge values its potentially immigrant/descendent of immigrant community and demonstrates such through support services and policy.iii

Cal State Northridge Graduate Programs

Cal State Northridge graduate programs ask students to meet both University and individual departments’ eligibility requirements for admission. The University requirements for admissions are as follows:vi

  • Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing at the last school they attended at the college level
  • Applicants must meet certain GPA requirements, which vary depending on if the applicant currently holds a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree.

At the department level, admissions requirements are as follows:vi

  • Applicants must meet the higher admission standards of individual master’s programs even if they have already met the university’s lower admission standards
  • Applicants must submit the academic, professional, and personal information required by their respective graduate program

To apply to doctorate programs, graduate applicants must first apply to and be accepted into an individual program. Once they have been accepted into the program, they can apply to the university for admission.vi

Cal State University Northridge online offers numerous graduate programs:vii

  • An M.P.A. in Public Administration (with multiple options for specialization: Health Administration, Nonprofit Sector Management, Public Sector Management and Leadership)
  • M.P.H. in Public Health: Community Health Education
  • M.S.W. in Social Work

To study CSUN speech pathology online, there are two options: The Certificate of Preparation for Advanced Studies in Speech-Language Pathology; and the Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Fieldwork Experience, Certificate of Advanced Professional Development.vii

In fall 2016, two percent of Cal State Northridge’s 4,160 graduate students were enrolled entirely in online programming, while 12 percent were enrolled in at least some online education. Eighty-six percent of graduate students attended classes entirely on the Cal State Northridge campus.vii

Average Cost

For most master’s degree level programs, tuition costs in-state students $4,161 to take seven or more units during the 2018-2019 school year.

Out-of-state students paid an additional $396 per unit. Books and supplies for these groups of students cost an estimated additional $1,001 per semester.iv

Business & Professional Program Costs

That same year, graduate-level business and professional programs cost in-state students $6,591 for nine units per semester, while out-of-state students paid an additional $396 per unit. For this group of students, books and supplies cost an additional estimated $1,001 per semester.iv

Doctoral Degree Programs

To earn a doctorate degree in education, students paid $6,492 per semester for an undisclosed number of units. Out-of-state students may have to pay an additional amount. This group too, paid an estimated additional $1,001 for books and supplies each semester.iv
