Program Description:

The master of arts program in Marriage and Family Therapy is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE). , it is intended for mature individuals with a strong commitment to the family therapy profession. All MFT core courses are open to matriculated students, only. The master of arts degree requires a comprehensive written qualifying exam or completion of a master’s project. Additionally, students must complete 500 hours of supervised clinical practice with individuals, couples and families under videotaped and live supervision. The dual master's degree program in Marriage and Family Therapy and Social Work allows students to complete a master's degree in two distinct professions in three years. The dual degree exposes students to philosophical and legal distinctions of both degrees. It introduces Marriage and Family Therapy students to a broader range of social work and social welfare course offerings. The doctoral program builds on a M.A. degree in MFT or completion of courses equivalent to the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) standard M.A. Curriculum. The 90 credit-hour curriculum consists of 39 credit hours from a M.A. in MFT or equivalent; 22 credits of advanced theory and practice; 12 credits of advanced research methodology; 3 credits of elective; 4 credits of advanced practicum; and l0credits of dissertation. Requirements also include a nine-month clinical internship and satisfactory completion of the doctoral qualifying examination and the doctoral dissertation and related oral examination.
