About New York University

New York University (NYU) is a private, not-for-profit university. NYU was founded as far back as 1831 by statesman, Albert Gallatin. Together, he and other founding fathers, planned NYU as a center of higher learning that “would be open to all, regardless of national origin, religious beliefs, or social background.”ⁱ

Since its first classes in Lower Manhattan circa 1832, New York University has grown, not only in enrollment. Presently, there are three degree-granting campuses in New York City, Shanghai, Abu Dhabi as well as study away sites in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America.

Faculty

Based on Fall 2016 information, NYU had 5,510 full-time and 4,110 part-time faculty along with 350 graduate assistants.

Program Model

A majority of all courses taught at NYU use a learning management system, and many use other technology-based tools to enhance teaching and learning. In addition, a variety of NYU schools offer online, blended, and low-residency programs.

For instance, through NYU Creative Writing Program, students could apply to a low-residency MFA Writers Workshop in Paris. Over two years, students and faculty convene regularly in Paris for five intensive ten-day residency periods held biannually in January and July. At other times, students pursue their courses and receive guidance through university mentors.

Other examples include a cross-continental Master of Public Health (MPH) program. Also, NYU’s Master of Studies in Law (MSL) in Taxation is an entirely online, part-time degree program for accountants and financial professionals.

Student Support Services

University life at NYU is supplemented with a variety of facilities, resources and services provided by the University.

Facilities: On campus, students could stay in shape through athletic programs and fitness centers and stay cultured at Washington Square East Gallery and the Grey Art Gallery. The Grey is guardian to New York University Art Collection.

Academic Resources: An abundant selection of academic resources await NYU grad students. From the Writing Center to the Academic Resource Center (ARC). ARC is the place to go when you don’t know where to go with academic navigation questions.

Media and Technology: Whether you need a computer or have a tech support question, NYU has various services available. This includes a copy center, book and computer store and more.

Libraries: There are several libraries at NYU. Of them, the Elmer Holmes, Bobst Library is the flagship. With over four million volumes, archives, electronic resources, Bobst Library offers approximately 2,500 seats for student study.

Centers: NYU offers many unique opportunities to study at its centers or institutes, some of which also offer degrees for academic studies. For example, there’s a Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP), the Marron Institute on Cities and the Urban Environment, Center for Data Science, and others.

It is dedicated to help participants understand and minimize the impact of disordered speech, language, hearing, and swallowing processes in children and adults.

• CSDM- MS: Curriculum melds coursework with supervised clinical experiences and a supervised practicum. It might prepare students to meet eligibility requirements for professional licensure as a speech pathologist
• CSDM- PhD: Stacks rigorous research experience, intensive coursework, and collaboration with faculty mentors. Graduates may be prepared to pursue careers such as independent researchers in CSD

Program Highlights: Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT)

Do you want to pursue licensure as a Doctor of Physical Therapy? Physical therapists (PTs) need a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree, and all states require PTs to be licensed.^iv Why not study in New York at NYU?

NYU Steinhardt School’s Department of Physical Therapy offers a 3-year, full-time entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program which includes three summers of supervised clinical practice. Upon completion of the program, graduates may be eligible and prepared to sit for the licensure exam.

NYU’s DPT program is also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). It combines academic study with intensive clinical practice which could enable students to study mobility, pain management and rehabilitation in more depth.
