Program Description:
MMus Advanced Musical Studies:
A programme offering a balance of broad-based and specialist training, designed to work as a self-standing qualifi cation or as a preparation for research (including practice-based research). Pathways in Composition, Ethnomusicology, Historical Musicology, Opera Studies, Performance, Performance Studies, and Theory & Analysis.
Royal College of Music/Royal Holloway MMus Performance Studies:
An advanced, intensive programme comprising 50% Performance (Royal College of Music) and 50% academic Performance Studies (Royal Holloway, University of London). It is equally suited to students seeking professional training and those seeking preparation for
practice-based research. Special fee bands apply. Students should apply to Royal Holloway in the first instance.
Research interests:
Staff specialisms range widely, stretching back from the present to
the Middle Ages, and encompassing popular/commercial musics,
world musics, and music of the Western tradition.
Research groupings also centre on France, Eastern Europe, the
Americas, and the ‘long’ 19th-century. Our research methodologies
cover:
• The social, political and institutional history of music
• Ethnomusicology – especially Latin America, the Caribbean,
Northern Europe, India and Tibet
• Historiography; reception history; aesthetics
• Editing & philology
• Opera studies
• Composition – acoustic and studio
• Performance; performance studies
• Theory & analysis – especially Schenker, medieval music, the
Second Viennese School, applications of empirical methods
