Process Automation

This is an Integrated Graduate Development Scheme (IGDS), which is designed around the needs for continuing professional development (CPD) within the chemicals and process sector. The aim of the IGDS is to broaden and deepen the expertise and experience of personnel concerned with process automation. The IGDS is offered through the Partnership in Automation and Control Training (PACT), which is comprised of the University and a consortium of companies in the sector.For the award of MSc you complete nine modules (135 credits, subject to a maximum of 45 credits of foundation modules) and an industrial project (45 credits). For the award of the Diploma you complete eight modules (120 credits). Individual modules may also be taken on a stand-alone basis for CPD purposes.Foundation modules include: mathematics and Matlab; chemical engineering principles; electrical and electronic principles; instrumentation and measurement. Further modules include: advanced process automation; advanced process control; batch processing and automation; classical control systems design; control schemes and strategies; control systems technology; modelling and simulation; modern control systems design; dynamics and control of distillation columns; fuzzy, neural and expert systems; management of automation projects; optimisation and scheduling.Each module consists of one weekÆs intensive tuition at the University, an assignment equivalent to another weekÆs work completed over the following two months, and concludes with a written examination. Candidates typically take two to three modules per year.
